In true Spaghetti Western-style, the hero of Cinemax’s Banshee is a man with no name. He does have an alias—Lucas Hood, Sheriff Lucas Hood—but we never discover his real name. At one point, he tells us that his name is John Smith, but we don’t believe him. When a man of violence comes to a rotten town there’s only one thing we can believe. Blood will spill, and blood does spill. This TV action series does not disappoint on that score or any other. Now that it’s over I feel as if something is missing. I have a hole. It’s not a hole in my hand like the real Lucas Hood. It’s just a hole somewhere inside. But looking back, I know, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
